Getting to Winter Park

Winter Park Resort is a 90-mile drive from Denver via Interstate 70 with a turnoff at Exit 232 onto U.S. Highway 40 North. The resort is about 40 minutes north on U.S. Highway 40. Winter Park is accessible from the north via U.S. Highway 40 South from Granby, through the towns of Tabernash and Frasier. Denver International Airport (DIA) is the closest major airport.

For almost 70 years, Denver residents could access Winter Park via the Ski Train, which traveled to the resort through the Moffat Tunnel. The Ski Train ended in 2009 but returned in 2017 as the Winter Park Express. The Winter Park Express departs from Union Station in Denver. Tickets are available for one-way, round-trip, and weekend trips to the resort. Tickets include a seat, access to snacks and drinks in the Lounge Car, and plenty of mountain scenery. Union Station is accessible from Denver International Airport via the A-Line train.

Why Ski at Winter Park

The Winter Park ski scene has a different vibe than most resorts. It’s laid back, non-pretentious, and offers a little something for everyone. Experts can get their fill at Mary Jane, Parsenn Bowl or Vasquez Cirque, while East Mountain is devoted mainly to beginner and intermediate skiers. West Mountain is sure to test the mettle of intermediate skiers honing their craft, and riders rave about the challenging terrain parks at the resort.

There’s even a designated space for newbies. This diversity makes Winter Park a popular spot for families and groups with skiers of varying abilities. In 2018, it was voted the Best Ski Resort in North America by the readers of USA Today.

The resort has three interconnected peaks accessible with a single lift ticket. The Mary Jane territory has its base area and is lauded for its tree skiing, moguls, hidden huts and more advanced terrain. The region includes Parsenn Bowl, which is above the tree line. Vasquez Ridge is known for its intermediate runs and moguls. The Vasquez Cirque opened in 1997, adding 435 of back-country terrain.

Winter Park Resort has slightly over 3,000 acres of skiable area, with 166 named trails. Most trails are rated difficult (52percent), while 19 percent is for advanced skiers, 18 percent for intermediates, 8 percent for beginners and 3 percent for experts. The base at Winter Park sits roughly 9,000 feet above sea level, and the summit tops at 12,060 feet (a vertical rise of 3,060 feet). Around Town

After hours, there is plenty to do, but don’t expect wild parties and late-night shenanigans like other ski resorts. Winter Park is geared toward families, so the vibe is more laid back and casual. Rent a Condo

Most condominiums have full kitchens, so you can prepare several meals at your residence to save money. You’ll also love the added space and privacy at a condo.

Map It Out

Grab a trail map and find areas of the resort that offer plenty of options in your ability range. Winter Park has an East Mountain, and a West Mountain and the skiing is quite different. The East Mountain is for beginners, while the West Mountain is for more advanced skiers. Hone your skills on the East Mountain, but peek over at the West Mountain when you gain confidence. Watch skiers coming down that mountain and assess your ability against theirs. Are you ready to make the switch? A resort-like Winter Park with varying ski runs can keep you happy season after season with its abundance and versatility.

Gear Recommendations

Cruise in Style

Ask your Winter Park ski rentals outfitter what’s new for the season. Retailers love promoting new products and may have some sweet demos to try.

Try Something New

Talk to your outfitter about cross-country skis, snowshoes or skinning. Downhill skiing will always be king, but many skiers love these growing activities’ challenges and physical demands. Cross-country skis will have you gliding across the horizon while you work different muscles and explore unique terrain. Slip on a pair of snowshoes and take a nature hike floating on fresh powder, or put a couple of synthetic skins on your skis and plan an early morning outing where you skin up the mountain and ski down.

Have Your Skis Delivered

Once you select your outfitter, schedule your equipment delivery for the day before you hit the slopes. Please plan to meet your outfitter either at their shop, your condo/hotel room, or at a designated meeting place. Most shops are flexible and can meet you where you need. Schedule your equipment pickup for late afternoon on your final day of skiing. Drop them off at the ski shop if it’s convenient for you. Otherwise, plan to meet up elsewhere to turn in your equipment.
