What Makes New York Unique

New York’s Lake Placid has already been home to two winter Olympic Games. The Adirondack state park is bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks combined. Northern New York offers breathtaking beauty and some serious ski and snowboard vertical challenges, making a New York ski vacation a great choice.

Major Ski Resorts

In all, New York has at least 32 ski resorts. In the north country is Dry Hill, Willard Mountain, Gore Mountain, Oak Mountain, Maple Ski Ridge, Royal Mountain, McCauley Mountain, Titus Mountain, Mt. Van Hoevenberg (for cross-country and snowshoeing,) and the incomparable Whiteface Mountain. Whiteface can boast about its 3,430 feet of vertical drop. It’s the greatest vertical drop in the east, 3,166 feet of which are lift-serviced. With 76 ski runs cover, 18 miles of trails, you’ll love this mountain. Snowboarders have five freestyle terrain parks, and there’s a super-tube, that’s one-and-a-half football fields long. Definitely a New York ski vacation destination of choice for this coming winter, and many more to come.

In the southeast part of the state are the Catskills, including Belleayre Mountain, Catamount, Holiday Mountain, Hunter Mountain, Ski Plattekill, Ski Sterling Forest, Thunder Ridge and Windham Mountain ski resorts. The central (Leatherstocking) region adds Beaver Lake and Highland Forest for cross-country, Four Seasons, Greek Peak Mountain, Labrador Mountain, Toggenburg Mountain, and the Woods Valley Ski Area.

To the west, toward Niagara Falls, is the Allegheny region. It brings the Brantling Ski Slopes, Bristol Mountain, Cockaigne Ski Area, Holiday Valley Resort, Holimont, Hunt Hollow, Kissing Bridge, Northhampton Park, Peek ‘n Peak Resort, Powder Mills Park, and the Swain Ski & Snowboard Center.

Only 75 minutes from New York City in Patterson, N.Y., there’s Thunder Ridge Ski and Snowboard. You don’t even have to have a car to get there! Just ride the Metro-North Ski Train. Now how much easier could it be than that? Thunder Ridge is very active, and offers night skiing until 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
