The town of Red River and the Red River Ski and Snowboard Area are located in the Rocky Mountains of Northern New Mexico, at the southernmost tip of the Sangre de Cristo Range. The town was originally founded as a mining and logging center, and many of its original structures have been renovated to keep the Victorian era feel.
Small Town Values—Easy Access to Slopes
Visiting here is almost like stepping back in time to small town values. In a valley completely surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Carson National Forest, the area is perfect for the winter activities that keep families returning year after year. Portions of the property used for skiing are federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service in a unique partnership with the ski resort.
The Red River Ski and Snowboard Area has something for everyone. Lift capacity of 7,920 skiers per hour, so there’s no standing and waiting. Also, there is no downtime on the mountain, as 75 percent of the terrain is subject to snowmaking. There are slopes for all levels of skiers, making this a true family ski paradise. Red River’s nationally recognized ski school caters to all ski levels, and the mountain offers family ski programs, group rates, and single-skier packages. Off the Slopes
If you have an interest in snowmobiling, tour operators will escort you on day trips to over more than 50 miles of freshly groomed trails. There are also more ambitious escorted adventures available, even to the top of 11,249-foot Greenie Peak. For cross-country skiers and snowshoers, there is the Enchanted Forest Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Area atop 9,800-foot Bobcat Pass, three miles east of Red River. More than 30 kilometers of professionaly groomed trails are in the expansive area, with all kinds of terrain amid spectacular mountain views. There are even 15 kilometers of snowshoe trails and a separate area where your dog can join you.
Most lodgings (hotels, motels, lodges, and bed-and-breakfast inns) are within easy walking distance to the ski area, and there is trolley service to those that are farther away. You can also go anywhere downtown on the trolley. Two of the six chairlifts rise directly from downtown, and most of the ski runs deliver you right to the edge of town.

To travel by air, take a connecting flight into Albuquerque New Mexico International Airport. There you can rent a car or catch a bus or van shuttle service to Red River. In addition, there are municipal airports in Taos and Santa Fe. Driving distance form Albuquerque is 167 miles, averaging about 3.5 hours.
