Maine may not be the first place one thinks of for a skiing trip, but the very same mountains that make Vermont a prized East-Coast ski destination provide world-class skiing for places like Sugarloaf Ski Resort and Sunday River in Maine as well—and for a lot less money!
Maine has sixteen ski resorts and two tube parks. Saddleback, Sugarloaf and Sunday River all boast over 2000 feet of vertical drop. What makes Maine skiing so great is that it’s FUN! Saddleback offers a terrain park and half-pipe for snowboarders, as well as ample beginner runs, intermediate runs, and black diamond slopes. Sugarloaf also has a terrain park and halfpipe, but offers up an impressive amount of beginner slopes, intermediate and almost sixty black-diamond runs over its 2820 vertical feet, and makes use of high-speed quad chairs to whisk skiers and riders to the top of the mountain.
Sunday River’s 2,340-vertical feet also includes plenty of runs for beginners, intermediates, and Black Diamond runners. The terrain park and half-pipe areas are well maintained and there are enough lifts to keep those legs burning all day long. After some night skiing? Mt. Abram and Black Mountain have you covered; both are offering 1,150-vertical feet.
Shawnee Peak has 1300 vertical feet and boasts 6 beginner runs, 23 intermediate and 14 Black Diamond runs, with a terrain park and half pipe for snowboarders as well.
The après-ski scene in Maine offers a relaxed atmosphere, something most people seem to enjoy. And of course, there’s always cross-country, snowshoe treks, ice skating, sleigh rides, and shopping. Maine is a tremendous snowmobiling area, with many miles of trails sure to make seeing this beautiful countryside an exciting treat.
So do yourself a favor; don’t go selling a Maine ski vacation short. The skiing is as good as the lobster, so you’re in for a real treat!
