Maine

Maine may not be the first place one thinks of for a skiing trip, but the same mountains that make Vermont a prized East-Coast ski destination provide world-class skiing for places like Sugarloaf Ski Resort and Sunday River in Maine as well — and for a lot less money.

Major Ski Resorts

Maine has sixteen ski resorts and two tube parks. Saddleback, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River boast more than 2,000 feet of vertical drop. What makes Maine skiing so great is that it’s fun! Saddleback offers a terrain park and halfpipe for snowboarders. There are also great beginner runs, intermediate trails, and black diamond slopes. Sugarloaf has a terrain park and halfpipe. It is also home to an impressive amount of beginner, intermediate, and black diamond runs over its 2,820 vertical feet. Sugarloaf uses high-speed quad chairs to whisk skiers and riders to the top of the mountain.

Sunday River’s 2,340 vertical feet include plenty of runs for beginners, intermediates, and Black Diamond runners. The terrain park and halfpipe are well maintained. Trust us: There are enough lifts to keep your legs burning all day long. After some night skiing? Mount Abram has you covered with more than 1,150 vertical feet.

Pleasant Mountain has 1,300 vertical feet, six easy trails, 23 intermediate, and 14 black diamond runs. There is a terrain park and halfpipe that’s a hit with riders.

The après-ski scene in Maine offers a relaxed atmosphere. It is something that most people seem to enjoy. And, of course, there’s always cross-country skiing, snowshoe treks, ice skating, sleigh rides, and shopping. Maine is a tremendous snowmobiling area.
