Alaska

Let’s face it, America’s Last Frontier is more than fantastic skiing; it’s some of the best in the world. Alaska has 17 of the highest mountains in the U.S. It is also home to the longest river in the U.S. (2,000 miles long), and an estimated 100,000 glaciers. In addition, Alaska has more than 6,500 miles of coastland. And as much as we love winter sports and activities, Alaska truly is one of our top vacation destinations.

Alaska is excellent for hitting a pipe, riding a rail, and skiing on the slopes. Heli-ski action, snowboarding, snowcat rides, snowshoeing, bowls, and chutes are available in Alaska for beginning and advanced skiers and riders. Those who are adventurous can take winter vacations up a notch with heli-skiing. Instead of just driving to a resort, you can go and ski where only helicopters and snowcats can take you.

Resort Skiing

Alyeska Resort sits in the glacier-carved valley of Girdwood, an hour east of Anchorage. To the west and north, the mountains of the Chugach State Park are home to 495,000 acres. It is the third largest U.S. state park. What a stunning view from the Alyeska Resort. The resort presents traditional ski and snowboard action. It’s 2,500 feet of vertical drop rivals any resort down “south” on the mainland. Also, Alyeska gets an annual snowfall of about 631 inches. The 1,400 skiable acres and 73 runs offer something for every skier. The nine lifts on site keep you from waiting, and beginner runs are easy and unintimidating. However, most runs are designated for the intermediate skier.

Heli-Skiing

Only four hours from Alyeska, Valdez is a top heli-ski destination. Heli-skiing is best for extreme skiers who want to hit the powder without that resort and ski-lift mentality. Therefore, heli-ski tours are for the advanced, expert skiers. You can experience a 5,000-foot vertical drop over rough terrain and untamed snow. For safety, trained mountain guides lead small groups on heli-ski trips. To summarize, the only requirement is you must possess advanced ski skills and nerves of steel.
