Sugar Bowl
Located just north of Palisades Tahoe and Northstar-at-Tahoe, Sugar Bowl spands four peaks and is home to 1,650 acres of skiable terrain. Steeped in History
In 1939, the would-be founder of Sugar Bowl, an Austrian named Hans Schroll, visited the Mt Lincoln area in June with a 30-foot snow base. Quickly deciding he had found the spot for an incredible ski resort, he lined up investors and started construction. During the year 2014, Sugar Bowl will invest $20 million to an already beautiful resort to enhance the user experience. Growing from 700 acres in 1939 to what it is now, this is an on mountain experience comparable to any other Lake Tahoe ski resort. From their on-mountain family park, to the rider’s terrain park, to the 1,500 vertical feet, the skiing here is impressive. Roughly 70 percent of the terrain on these four peaks remains ungroomed, and with the mountains’ fresh snowfall, you’ll love this ski experience. Their 103 trails range in difficulty giving each skier a unique experience. Nearly 17 percent of the trails are for the beginner skiers, 45 perfect are rated for the intermediate, and 38 percent are rated advanced. The same is true for The Switching Yard Terrain Park. Divided into three separate parks, your kids can learn tricks and advance as they improve. Steeped in history, Sugar Bowl is not to be missed. The skiing here is so good the resort boasts the nation’s only ski-in / ski-out academy that offers a unique boarding school experience to top-level athletes, sending numerous skiers to the U.S. Ski Team each year.
Off the Slopes
Dining and lodging on the mountain make it easy to break during the day for lunch, and rest each night. The mountain is just a half hour from North Lake Tahoe, where additional dining and lodging options give you more activities and winter fun. Just off the mountain slopes is the Sugar Bowl Resort, where 6,000 acres of cross-country trails beg your attention. After renovations, a fat-tire bike track will also be available, which is something everyone should try at least once. With this type of winter environment, your options for fun are endless. Getting Here
Sugar Bowl is located just an hour and a half north of Sacramental, making it a perfect weekend getaway. Just hop on Interstate 80 and head east towards Donner Summit. Take Exit 174 at the Norden / Soda Springs and turn right on Highway 40. Just three miles and you’ll be there!
