A Name (and a Vacation) to Remember
Brian Head Resort is stunning. It is a ski destination nestled among the state’s national parks and monuments in the epicenter of Utah’s Color Country. Covering more than 650 acres, the resort is connected by two mountains – Giant Steps and Navajo. The resort has more than 70 runs serviced by eight chair lifts.
Brian Head boasts Utah’s highest base elevation at 9,600 feet. It houses two central base lodges equipped with rentals, free storage lockers, and dining. The ski resort is known for its non-existent crowds and lack of lift lines.
Brian Head also has a rich history and cultural heritage. Originally known as Monument Peak, the mystery behind the area’s renaming is just as peculiar as the name. The region’s pure mountain water and cool night temperatures attracted its original settlers, the Fremont Native American tribe. They were later followed by cowboys and cattlemen. Once used as a point of reference by early explorers, it is said to have been renamed either after a surveyor named Bryan or William Jennings Bryan, an American politician. But no one knows for sure. The ski resort was opened in 1964 with one chair lift, and the town was established 10 years later.
Brian Head’s terrain is suitable for all ability levels and is equally spread out among them. There are two terrain parks within an area called the Training Grounds, a world-class tubing park. It is one of the most family-friendly ski destinations in Utah. There is an excellent ski school to complement activities like snow tubing and night skiing.
Off the Slopes
There are several slopeside restaurants and retail stores on the mountain, a few small stores and a post office. The full-service day spa at the Cedar Breaks Lodge and Spa is a popular activity for both skiers and non-skiers. Further downhill in Cedar City, visitors will find a few large chain grocery and department stores. There are smaller stores down the road in Parowan.
Getting Here
The resort is equal distance from Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. Take I-15 to exit 75 at Parowan by car. From there, it’s a quick trip to the mountain’s village. Brian Head is about a three-hour drive from either city.
