Blackjack Mountain
Fresh out of the gate, the vibe is a lot more than one might imagine. This mountain may not look like the Rockies from the base, but there are some flat-out gnarly runs to challenge even the most expert skier. Blackjack was voted the Best Ski Resort in the Midwest in 2011 and due to its close proximity to Big Powderhorn, Indianhead, and several other resorts, you can’t miss your opportunity to hit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The area sits just north of the Wisconsin border and south of Lake Superior. While it’s surrounded by the natural beauty of several national forests, people often forget what awe that part of the county can inspire. The vibe is warm and friendly, and the views of Ottawa National Forest are breathtaking from the mountain. Season pass holders will get to enjoy more than just Blackjack during their ski season as the resort is owned and operated together with Little Switzerland and Nordic Mountain.
With a vertical drop of over 460 feet, Blackjack Ski Resort offers up over 125 skiable acres. It’s not unheard of that the Upper Peninsula can receive over 250 inches a year with an average snowfall of 210 inches. On top of the, the resort covers their trails with man-made snow providing you with a base for mother nature to fill in. It is smaller compared to some, but the mountain and snow make up for it. The resort has four chair lifts, two tow ropes, which services a half pipe near the base. All of the runs are accessible with A, C, Rope, and Handle Tow lifts, opening up the traffic flow. Their longest run is nearly a mile long, and Spillway and Cameron runs offer moguls. Off the Slopes
Truly beautiful the entire year around, visitors of the U.P. will find themselves wondering if they need more time during their stay. There are more snowmobile and cross-county trails than you can cover, and ice fishing roots on Lake Superior date back to before settlers arrived. The area is home to two Indian casinos, as well as other fun bars and restaurants on and off the mountain. While the area has a small-town feel, you will be happy with this family friendly winter destination. Nearby are the Porcupine Mountains and Mount Bohemia, which also offer up loads of fun activities. And because this sounds like more fun than we can imagine, we are also recommending a visit to Copper Peak. It’s the only ski flying hill in the Western Hemisphere and this impressive structure is 241 feet high and gives the ski flyer the feeling we’ve all wondered about— flying down a 469 foot inrun—but you know, without the landing bit. Luckily, skiers and snowboarders enjoy their winter sports so much, finding the right gear to stay warm is not just necessary, but also fun. Be sure to wear the appropriate under armer and thermals, as well as additional gear for comfort and warmth like ski goggles, a baklava, and a helmet for safety.
