Big Bear, California

Mountain Paradise

Big Bear is the reason that everybody in the world wants to live in California.

Even if you wake up near the beach, you can drive into the snowy Sierra Nevadas on the same day. Just a few hours away from warmer temperatures, getting out onto the snow completes the dream of living in Southern California.

Adventure Time

For people that love outdoor activities, this area of the San Bernardino National Forest is full of adventure. From skiing to hiking mountain trails, the resorts really have it all.

Big Bear Lake Village even has shopping and places to eat or hang out after a day on the slopes.

But the true snow fiends don’t come here to shop. The most popular wintertime activity in all of Big Bear is clearly snowboarding and skiing.

Snowboarding on Bear Mountain

There are two major resorts in the area.

Bear Mountain Resort with terrain parks and plenty of runs is where the real snow lovers go. Though it can get busy in the peak season, Bear Mountain manufactures snow in order to give snowboarders a longer season to play with. There are 800 acres of terrain and over 500 acres of backcountry to explore. 30 percent of the terrain is perfect for first-timers and low-intermediate level skiers, 40 percent is intermediate level terrain, and the remaining 30 percent are ideal runs for advanced and expert riders and skiers.

Nearby Snow Summit Ski Resort is a more family-friendly spot. Snow Summit is a good choice for beginners to get used to the sport without feeling out of place.  Get plenty of bluebird days at these resorts in California and start enjoying the slopes and the sunshine.

No Gear? No Problem.

Not everyone owns their own stuff. Grab your skiing or snowboarding gear on the way up to the mountain.

At Potter’s Mountain Sports on Big Bear Boulevard in the city of Big Bear, you and your friends can get outfitted with everything. They have snowboarding pants, jackets, helmets, and brand-name goggles at affordable rental prices. Potter’s opens an hour before the resorts so you can do same-day rentals.

Rental boards are always a good call since they get routine maintenance from the professionals. The best rental shops will keep up with the times by buying the newest technology in boards. They will have lots of choices so you can be comfortable on the mountain, whether you like the stability of strap bindings or the convenience of clip-ins.

Quality skis and snowboards are available at Goldsmith’s Boardhouse & Ski Rental alone or with boots. Ask the guys in here to help you choose a package. From beginner to advanced, they’ve got the right gear for your experience level. Goldsmith’s is also on Big Bear Boulevard so you don’t have to get off track just to suit up.

Once you’re situated, it’s time to hit the famous slopes of Big Bear.

Load your friends back into the car and get out onto the mountain. The Southern California snow is calling and it’s time to answer.
